SPECIAL EVENTS: MAKE A WISH - MILES TO SMILES TELETHON: The telethon was held in the KOMO studios 6:00am-7:00pm on August 1, 2013, fronted by talent from KOMO4TV, KOMO Newsradio, and Smart Talk KVI. The drive generated 11,253,131 air miles to send kids with life-threatening illnesses and their families on the dream trips of their young lives. This equates to a savings of close to $112,000 for the non-profit organization. KOMO News produced and aired packages that showcased local kids and the wishes that have been granted. Prior to the telethon, KOMO produced and aired spots promoting the telethon. EVERGREEN STATE FAIR FOOD DRIVE. On August 23, KOMO4TV and KOMO Newsradio personnel participated in the Fair Cares Food Drive to benefit the Snohomish County Food Bank. A total of 36,000 pounds of food was donated. BACK-TO-SCHOOL EVENTS; KOMO4TV and the KOMO News Network talent visited five community back-to-school events throughout the Puget Sound region during the month of August handing out free KOMO News Network branded school supplies . BEN'S FUND - AUTISM AWARENESS: The mission of this yearlong project is to provide grant opportunities to families in Washington state who need financial assistance with services specifically related to autism spectrum disorder treatments -- from therapies to equipment KOMO4TV airs PSA's promoting Ben's Fund and has secured a sponsor for additional paid spots. Founders John and Traci Schneider have also appeared on KOMO 4 News to discuss various fundraisers for Ben's Fund. SCHOOL TOOLS; KOMO4TV and KOMO Newsradio joined forces with Bartell Drug Stores to collect pencils, pens, paper and other school tools to help low-income kids get off to the right start at the beginning of the school year. Together we collected $26,007 in supplies for School Tools for Kids in Need. This is more than $6,000 higher than what we collected last year. 100 DEADLIEST DAYS: Statistics show that teenagers, as well as adults, drink and drive more between Memorial Day and Labor Day, resulting in a higher percentage of fatal crashes. This timeframe is known as the "100 Deadliest Days." KOMO4TV and KOMO Newsradio's support of the MADD WA campaign entered its third phase (for the 4th of July Holiday) as we ran PSA's encouraging viewers not to drink and drive. FIRST DAY AT THE FAIR FOOD DRIVE: On September 6, The Washington State Fair in Puyallup traditionally offers free gate admission on opening day, with a recommended donation to the Puyallup Food Bank.
