Poppy Cat is the leader of his group of animal friends, and the story always features an underlying message about being nice to yet ignoring the antics of the resident bully, a badger named Egbert. WHEC-TV engages in non-broadcast activities such as conducting station tours, participating in reading programs at area schools and speaking to various groups about careers in the communications industry. On, 2/13/15, news anchors Rebecca Leclair, served as a speaker for sponsors and student volunteers at the A Very Beary Brunch for Teddi Dance for Love annual kick-off brunch. On 2/20/15 and 2/21/15, News Anchor, Rebecca Leclair, was the Honorary Chair for the 33rd annual Teddi Dance for Love, 24 hour dance marathon to benefit Camp Good Days and Special Times. She helped kick-off the event. On 2/25/15, Program Coordinator, Karen Calarese, conducted a station tour for a group of scholar students from School No. 10 in Rochester, NY. Job descriptions and responsibilities for the various departments were explained. The group got to meet News Anchors, Rebecca Leclair and Janet Lomax. As a school project they are required to produce a PSA. We gave them tips on what they can do to make a great PSA. Their topic will be fighting obesity. On 2/27/15, Meteorologist, Rich Caniglia, read to students at CP Rochester School as part of National Read Across America Day. On 2/27/15, Meteorologist, Rich Caniglia, also attended Sherman Elementary School for their Celebrity Read at Night event. The students were finishing their month long reading campaign. On, 3/10/15, Meteorologist, Rich Caniglia, severed as a Judge for over thirty middle school aged students at the Derech HaTorah Jewish School Science Fair. On 3/12/15, Meteorologist, Rich Caniglia, read to groups of third grade students at TJ Conner Elementary School. On 3/14/15, our Director of Sales, Lauren Burruto, served as Emcee for the Center for Youth Gala. She helped with the program and the silent auction in announcing what was happening and how people could help. The Center provides emergency shelter for youth and young adults. WHEC-TV also participates in a project whereby local high school seniors are nominated to be the News10NBC Scholar Athlete of the week. Every Tuesday our sports-team selects a unique senior who not only holds a B+ (85 or higher) average academically, but also excels in one or more school athletic programs. The recipient is profiled during the sports segment of our six o'clock newscast, September through the first week of June.
