Examples of these PSAs include cyber bullying, reckless driving, smoking, etc. Station WZVN continues to build its positive and open relationship with the area school systems and youth organizations in our viewing area by inviting groups to participate in station tours. The visitors are given a behind the scenes tour of the television station, with emphasis on the studio plus the news, production and master control operations. Job duties and qualifications discussions are encouraged as the youngsters consider various aspects of the industry as potential careers. WZVN participates in the STEM program, a collaboration between area businesses and school systems to promote the advancement of educational training and specialization in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Station staff gives tours offering first-hand knowledge and demonstrations how a background in these studies can enhance opportunities when seeking a career in broadcasting. In addition to hosting students with the STEM program, teachers in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics also receive station tours and are given information how the broadcast industry incorporates their areas of interest. Off site, WZVN anchors and reporters are available for classroom visits throughout the year. Additionally, numerous WZVN representatives are active throughout the community, some in high profile, decision rendering roles, serving on public service and charity organization committees and boards and/or volunteering through non-profit groups that specifically promote the well-being of our area youth. In October the station wrapped up its pacesetter campaign for United Way. Over $30,000 was raised through employee contributions to fund agencies served by United Way. Many of those agencies, such as Boys & Girls Club, Boy Scouts, Bridges Initiative for Homeless School Children; Child Care of Southwest Florida, Children's Advocacy Center, Children's Home Society, Healthy Start Coalition, Public Schools Enrichment, are specifically geared toward serving the needs and the betterment of the young people in our area. |
