There was wide local interest in story where two local state troopers were killed in the line of duty. We provided extensive coverage of this story, even live coverage of their funerals which had to be held at the Charleston Civic Center because it was such a large event attended by thousands of people. Local politicians, statesmen, families, friends and law enforcement officers from all over the country attended the event. We received so much goodwill from the viewing public it was overwhelming. Following the story of the trooper killings, we found there was a need for bullet proof vests for state troopers in Roane County, WV. We provided air time to talk about the problem, and spur public action. We provided coverage of this year's upcoming election, offering information on local and national candidates, issues, etc. WVAH TV promoted its public service effort called "No Text Zone" to educate and encourage drivers to stop texting while driving, which recently became the law of the land in West Virginia. WVAH TV participated in and supported the following events: Our Back Pack Attack event collected over 650 backpacks for children who need them. Our Fugitive Files segment continues to be a great public service where we profile wanted criminals, solicit viewer phone calls, and local law enforcement agencies act on their tips, giving viewers the power to make their neighborhood a safer place to live. The segment has helped net 463 wanted criminals to date. Our Behind the Kitchen Door segment reveals which restaurants are doing well to keep their eateries clean and safe for patrons, and which ones may need a little help according to the health dept. WVAH TV organized a food drive for residents who needed help after falling victim to recent storms. We also disseminated information to storm victims for FEMA. |
