Include any other comments or information you want the Commission to consider in evaluating your compliance with the Children's Television Act (or use this space for supplemental explanations). This may include information on any other noncore educational and informational programming that you aired this quarter or plan to air during the next quarter, or any existing or proposed non-broadcast efforts that will enhance the educational and informational value of such programming to children. See 47 C.F.R. Section 73.671, NOTES 2 and 3. | Effective the week of September 26, 2010, NBC and its affiliates launched the "Education Nation" campaign. It is a nationally broadcast, in-depth conversation that seeks to engage the public, through thoughtful dialogue, in pursuit of the shared goal of providing every American with an opportunity to pursue the best education in the world, especially our children. During an interactive summit on Rockefeller Plaza, parents, teachers, and students come together with leaders in politics, business, and technology to discuss the challenges and opportunities in education today. In addition, NBC turned Rockefeller Plaza into a "Learning Plaza," open to the public, which allowed visitors to explore America's educational "ecosystem." WHEC-TV engages in non-broadcast activities such as conducting station tours, participating in reading programs at area schools and speaking to various groups about careers in the communications industry. Karen Calarese conducted a station tour on Wednesday, 2/20/13 for a group of cub-scouts from Gates, NY and on Wednesday, 3/20/13, for a group of girl-scouts from Pittsford, NY. While on the tours, Meteorologist, Rich Caniglia and News Anchor, Rebecca Leclair, answered questions about their responsibilities and the education they have for their individual careers. On Thursday, 1/17/13, 1/24/13, 1/31/13 and 2/7/13, News Anchor, Nikki Rudd, tutored students one-on-one at School No. 3, with a writing project about overcoming struggles in their lives. This project culminated with a celebration on Tuesday, 2/12/13, where Nikki's student, Quadir, was one of four students chosen to read his story in front of the audience. Sports Director, Robin DeWind, worked with 5th grade students at the Adams Street School on Thursday, 1/17/13, 1/24/13, 1/31/13 and 2/7/13 teaching them how to write stories for a presentation. Engineer, Jon Sheehan, gave a station tour to Cub Scout Pack 277. He explained the different job responsibilities that make up a broadcasting station. On Wednesday, 2/20/13, News Anchor, Rebecca Leclair, emceed a fundraising event for St. John Bosco School. On Saturday, 3/9/13, News Anchor, Janet Lomax, attended Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks Intergenerational Professional Women's Brunch. Janet was one of several professional women who served as mentors at the request of County Executive Maggie Brooks. They met with students from the city and county to talk about their professions, how they got where they are, what their goals and aspirations are and how they can achieve them. This was the first Intergenerational Professional Women's Brunch hosted by the county. News Reporter, Joangel Concepcion, participated in the Rochester City School District's "I'm Ready" career day on Saturday, 3/13/13. On Wednesday, 3/27/13, Meteorologist, Josh Nichols, spoke to a group of 6th graders at Victor Intermediate School about his job, the training involved and the instruments that are used to observe and forecast the weather. WHEC-TV also participates in a project whereby local high school seniors are nominated to be the News10NBC Scholar Athlete of the week. Every Tuesday our sports-team selects a unique senior who not only holds a B+ (85 or higher) average academically, but also excels in one or more school athletic programs. The recipient is profiled during the sports segment of our six o'clock newscast, September through the first week of June. WHEC-TV airs a Kids Programming PSA that explains the programming educational/informational symbol; what it means and how parents can use it. This :30 second PSA aired as follows: 1/5/13, 11:27AM; 1/5/13, 12:23PM; 1/5/13, 3:53PM; 1/8/13, 12:39PM; 1/12/13, 11:57AM; 1/14/13, 2:50PM; 1/19/13, 10:58AM; 1/24/13, 9:58AM; 1/31/13, 10:58AM; 2/2/13, 11:57AM; 2/5/13, 12:21PM; 2/5/13, 2:50PM; 2/9/13, 10:57AM; 2/15/13, 2:28PM; 2/16/13, 11:27AM; 2/19/13, 2:43PM; 2/23/13, 10:57AM; 3/1/13, 2:28PM; 3/2/13, 10:57AM; 3/8/13, 12:55PM; 3/9/13, 12:08PM; 3/11/13 |
