During the First Quarter, Golden Apple Awards were given to teachers at Morningview Elementary in Montgomery, Troy Elementary, Ft. Deposit Elementary in Lowndes County, Daniel Pratt Elementary in Autauga County, Dadeville High in Tallapoosa County, Highland Home School in Crenshaw County, McMillan International Academy in Montgomery, Wetumpka Middle School, Amelia Love Johnson High School, and Edgewood Elementary School in Dallas County. Those nominating the teachers, other teachers, and students in the classes were interviewed on camera. Some comments from students are, their teacher teaches them everything they need to know; their teacher is so kind when she teaches that she inspires them to do their best; one student said she went from not being good to getting hundreds and hundreds on tests; their teacher is notorious for helping them grow into beautiful creatures that can contribute to the world in a remarkable way; the teacher is dedicated and loves his work; and the teacher mixes in humor with encouragement and makes it easier to understand. The News reported on several activities that featured youths during the quarter. Many of the young ones had an opportunity to be interviewed. Some of the stories included 43 students taking part in a Job Shadow Day at Baptist South; students at McMillan Elementary kicked off Read Across America Week. They were shown asking each other questions about Dr. Seuss's characters, and even put on a play; 3rd up to 12th graders showed off their technical skills at a technology fair at Auburn University at Montgomery. The top two finishers will move on to a state competition on April 26; the Law and Public Safety Academy held a Field Day at a local school to give students considering a career in law enforcement an opportunity to see officers in action; Selma police are using reading, writing, arithmetic, and even pizza to promote learning at schools and to help fight crime; Highland Elementary students celebrated Dr. Seuss's birthday by Marching for Reading; students visited a local university to see what it has to offer; a middle school held a bullying and suicide prevention workshop after a student committed suicide; a science fair at a middle school where a record 500 projects were entered was highlighted. All students were required to participate. The station continues to air two non-core E/I programs on Saturday mornings from 6-7 A.M. No local commercials are placed in any of the syndicated children's programs. Local time is filled with public service announcements targeting the youth, their parents, and care-givers. Starting on January 11 and ending on March 29, 2014 a Future Weather Forecaster was given the opportunity to appear with Weather Anchor Marcy Novak on the Early Morning News program each Friday and give the weather report. Auditions were held, and 12 winners ranging in age from 7 to 12 years old were chosen.
