Include any other comments or information you want the Commission to consider in evaluating your compliance with the Children's Television Act (or use this space for supplemental explanations). This may include information on any other noncore educational and informational programming that you aired this quarter or plan to air during the next quarter, or any existing or proposed non-broadcast efforts that will enhance the educational and informational value of such programming to children. See 47 C.F.R. Section 73.671, NOTES 2 and 3. During the 3rd quarter of 2011, WDEF TV aired various youth oriented PSAs. A complete listing of PSAs which aired is located in the station public file. Following the Summer break at area schools WDEF again sponsored the Golden Apple Awards program. Students were asked to write a paragraph nominating a teacher who has had a positive influence and motivated them to learn. Winners were chosen weekly by a panel of judges. The winning teacher along with the nominating student were featured in the Golden Apple segment in our Tuesday 6pm newscast and also featured on our station's website. Another program featured on WDEF TV, highlights the positive elements within our area schools. News anchor, John Mercer featured a segment in our Monday 6pm newscast called- What's Right with Our Schools. This segment featured educators, students, individuals or community groups which work with the students/schools in an extraordinary manner and went above and beyond the norm in helping to educate children through life lessons. A few of those stories featured this quarter begin with the team effort of the Salvation Army and the Target Stores to provide children with the tools they need for success this year. The ever increasing price of clothing and supplies, is financial burden on many and can weigh heavy on some parents pocket books but with the program some thirty Chattanooga and Cleveland students each received an $80 gift card to purchase much needed school supplies. Across the country nearly 500 Target Stores and 39 Salvation Army locations received $960,000 worth of Target gift cards to assist parents and children in purchasing school related items. Another story in which business teamed with an area school to restock school classrooms was Gateway Bank and Ringgold High School. Ringgold High School was severely damaged earlier this year by a tornado and the two teamed up to fill a bus with donations to assist the school and students get ready for the new school year. Another program school program highlighted involved the Choo Choo Chapter of USA Dance and Brainerd High School. USA Dance provided a ten week dance course for Students to expose them to the arts and and help them become better rounded students. The students were excited about doing something different and definitely a little outside the box. WDEF sponsored a year round program called Kidcaster. Kids in grades 3rd-8th entered by writing a paragraph on why they wanted to be a Weather Kidcaster. One winner was chosen each week to come to the station and video tape a weather forecast with station meteorologist Patrick Core. The Kidcaster segment then aired during the 11pm newscast on Mondays and again in the 6am news on Tuesdays. Each weather kidcaster was able to walk through the process of developing an on air weather forecast and was given a behind the scenes tour to see the inner workings of a TV station. They were then presented an official Kidcaster Certificate. WDEF sponsored a Safe Families booth at this years Hamilton County Fair which was visited by 20,000 plus people. News 12 anchors were present during the two day fair to give out ID wristbands to children which contained theirs parents cell phone number in case they became separated from their parents. The child was advised to approach a police officer and have them call their parents. This was a very popular program and a great safety precaution for parents and children.
