See 47 C.F.R. Section 73.671, NOTES 2 and 3. | During the 3rd quarter of 2013, WDEF TV aired various youth oriented PSAs. A complete listing of PSAs which aired is located in the public file. Following a brief summer break, returning in September, WDEF continued to sponsor the Golden Apple Awards program. Students, with their parents permission, were asked to write a paragraph nominating a teacher who has had a positive influence and motivated them to learn. Winners were chosen bi-monthly by a panel of judges then the winners were highlighted during our Tuesday 6pm newscast. The winning teachers were featured in the Golden Apple segment in our newscast and also featured on our stations website. News anchor, John Mercer featured a segment in our Monday, 6pm newscast called, Whats Right with Our Schools. This segment features educators, students, individuals or community groups which works with the students/schools in an extraordinary manner and go above and beyond the norm in helping to educate children through life lessons. John highlights Rossville Middle School as the school was recognized for their STEM education efforts. The awards were created to recognize and honor individuals and organizations for their outstanding effort and achievement in supporting and promoting STEM education in Georgia. Their effort is to get kids interested in STEM so they are better prepared to seize the opportunities of tomorrow. Another program highlighted was the I-School initiative-where 500 iPads were distributed to students in grades 3 through 8 at Saddle Ridge Elementary/Middle School. The program will tie in the training of the teachers with the students so everyone is learning about the new technology together as our world is headed with internet access 24/7 and is an essential tool to survival moving forward. During the third quarter WDEF did a weekly segment called-Kidcaster and kids in grades 3 thru 8 (with their parents consent) could write in an tell why they would like to be a Kidcaster and give the weather forecast during the news. Each week a young Kidcaster is chosen and comes to the station with their parents, watches a live newscast behind the scenes. The kidcaster, along with the meteorologist prepares a weather forecast and then tapes a brief weather forecast which airss during the late news and during the morning news the next day. Following the taping the kidcaster and their family are given a tour of the station. |
