October 1st - November 8, 2012 - Student Hunger Drive The Student Hunger Drive is a campaign to help feed our area hungry while instilling a sense of volunteerism and community in area youth. Community leaders parter with local foodbanks and area schools to host a six week challenge every fall. Currently, Student Hunger Drives are taking place in the Quad Cities (Iowa and Illinois) and Charlotte, North Carolina. Students are the power behind this mission creating a fun and innovative ways to raise money, collect food and feed the hungry.The Student Hunger Drive was founded in 1986 by Pete Pohlmann in Davenport, Iowa and has collected over 13.6 million pounds of food valued at over $25 million since its inception,. The food collected is delivered to the River Bend Foodbank located in Moline, IL. The Foodbank serves 22 counties in Iowa and Illinois. Boo at the Zoo - Saturday, October 27th and Sunday, October 28th, 2012 WQAD, Eye Surgeons Associates P.C., Sexton Ford, Harris Pizza teamed up with Niabi Zoo to present a fun day for one of the most popular holidays of the year for children - Halloween. "Boo at the Zoo" provides children with the opportunity to have a merry-no-scary fun time in a controlled and safe environment. Businesses and non-profit organizations participate by decorating a designated area in a Halloween theme, staff the booth dressed in costume and give out"goodies" to the children as they trick-or-treat around the zoo. 2012 Toys for Tots Campaign Created in the fall of 1947 in Los Angeles, California by Marine Corps Reserve Major Bill Hendricks, Toys for Tots today, is one of the nation's flagship Christmas charitable endeavors. The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys Program is the Marine Corp's premier community action program and one of the nation's flagship charitable causes. Over the years, it has become a traditional part of the annual Christmas holiday season within communities nationwide. The message of hope delivered through a shiny new toy at Christmas has a positive impact on children, their families and their communities. It's not the toy - it's what the toy does. WQAD's News Staff were present at the Festival of Trees Parade on Saturday, November 19, 2011. This was also part of the Toys for Tots Campaign. They passed out candy to all the children. Approximately 20, 000 Adults and children attend this annual event. Lighting of the Commons - Saturday November 17, 2012 WQAD was once again the sponsor of this event held on the John Deere Commons in Moline, IL. Our very own Denise Hnytka was the emcee of the event. They held season activities including Victoria characters, free refreshments, children's activities, horse drawn wagon rides and Santa and his elves. Fireworks topped of the evening. WQAD also participated in the 2012 Festival of Trees Parade which took place on Saturday, November 17th in Davenport, Iowa. The WQAD news anchors were a part of the marching parade that morning representing our station and distributing candy to all of the children. This years parade participation was the largest that it has ever been.
