Include any other comments or information you want the Commission to consider in evaluating your compliance with the Children's Television Act (or use this space for supplemental explanations). This may include information on any other noncore educational and informational programming that you aired this quarter or plan to air during the next quarter, or any existing or proposed non-broadcast efforts that will enhance the educational and informational value of such programming to children. See 47 C.F.R. Section 73.671, NOTES 2 and 3. NBC3 is committed to age-appropriate experiences and enrichment for Central New York children. Toys for Tots is our major 4th quarter event: as media sponsors for the USMC Reserve, we are a dropoff point for toys, and the week before Christmas we stage a dropoff drive-through night at the broadcast center, offering hot chocolate and cookies as we collect toys from families, groups, and business partners. We are also partners in Onondaga County's Christmas Bureau, the Christmas Week distribution to needy families, coordinated by The Salvation Army and United Way. This, year food and toys were provided to 2,478 families, including 6,710 children. We feel that both efforts provide teacheable moments on lifetime giving and helping those in need, for the many school groups (for example, Christian Brothers Academy) that do in-school food/toy drives and then volunteer at distribution. Our staffers also volunteer in signing up families and at distribution, and the station rings the bell for Salvtion Army on one day in the holiday season: we bring candy canes to 'reward' children who drop coins in the kettle. On-air, our High School Athlete of the Week weekly segment profiles a student who excels academically and in community involvement, as well as in sports. We also do an 'I Challenge Niko' sports segment: mostly high school students make the challenge to show off their abilities. This Fall we had 9 newsroom and sports interns, from Syracuse University, Onondaga Community College, SUNY Cortland and SUNY Oswego, who are mentored by staffers as they explore career possibilities. There are 2 winter sports interns (December-January) from SUNY Oswego in our intensive over-break program. Staffers regularly speak on careers at area colleges and high schools, emphasizing career planning, the need for understanding technology, and developing good work/lifestyle habits. In addition we do station tours and job shadows (with the same emphasis) and several staffers are involved in community boards and volunteer efforts which provide education and services to children, and model involvement and fitness and healthy lifestyles.
