Include any other comments or information you want the Commission to consider in evaluating your compliance with the Children's Television Act (or use this space for supplemental explanations). This may include information on any other noncore educational and informational programming that you aired this quarter or plan to air during the next quarter, or any existing or proposed non-broadcast efforts that will enhance the educational and informational value of such programming to children. See 47 C.F.R. Section 73.671, NOTES 2 and 3. | WNYT-TV, LLC has timely filed its license renewal application. The renewal is pending. WNYT-TV, LLC ceased broadcasting its analog channel on 6/12/2009 per FCC. WNYT-TV - Children's Report First Quarter - January 2011 Brain food - January 3, 2011, 5:00 am A new study finds weight gain may actually change the brain's response to food. Using an MRI, researchers found that overweight and obese adults who drank a milkshake had decreased activity in the reward region of the brain. Interestingly, the effect was the exact opposite in children. Researchers say it appears that eating these types of foods throughout life may over stimulate the brain's reward center which eventually tones itself down. 3D Gaming Warning - January 3, 2011 - 11:00 pm, January 5, 2011 - 5:00 am Some of the latest 3d video games may not be suitable for young children, and one manufacturer is putting out a warning. Nintendo says its "3-D" gaming system could have a negative effect on the eyes of children under six years old. They say if the 3-D strength level is cranked up and played for a long time, it could harm kid's eyes. Nintendo's posted about a caution about the 3D's on its Japanese website. Stomach Bug - January 4, 2011 - 12:00 pm A bad stomach bug is sickening more kids. New research shows more children are being diagnosed with a strain of a common intestinal bug known as c-difficile. That's a gastro-intestinal illness that can lead to severe sickness, and in rare cases, death. Researchers say the number of cases rose about 15 percent a year from 1997 to 2006. Experts blame the overuse of antibiotics for the spread this latest bug. They say hand washing could help prevent people from getting sick. Kids and Radiation - January 4, 2011 - 11:00 pm A new study says the average American child will have seven radiation imaging exams during childhood. Researchers say exposure to radiation adds up over a lifetime, and kids are more susceptible to harmful effects. X-rays were the most common radiation exposure for kids, but the study found 12 percent came from c-t scans. And those deliver much higher radiation doses. Too Much Fluoride Water - January 7, 2011 - 11:00 pm According to the CDC 23 percent of kids aged 12- 15 had signs of fluorosis. In extreme cases, teeth can even get pitted. Fluoride has been added to many public water supplies since the 1940's - it's up to states and cities to decide whether to add it. Dentists say low amounts of fluoride are considered safe and necessary. Autism Second Child - January 10, 2011 - 12:00 pm A new study on autism finds a possible link between the disease and how long parents wait to conceive after their first child is born. Researchers found children conceived before their older sibling is one year old, are 'three' times more likely to be diagnosed with autism. That's compared to children spaced at least three years apart. Scientists who conducted the study say they suspect the cause may be related to nutrients being depleted from the mother's body. Humidifiers - January 10, 2011 - 5:00 pm Doctors say the lungs of babies may not be able to handle the chemical particles kicked out by ultrasonic humidifiers. Doctors also say there isn't any clear evidence humidifiers relieve cold symptoms. Other doctors believe humidifiers do help, if they are properly cleaned after each use. Otherwise, they can build up bacteria, fungus and a white dust created by minerals, all of which can irritate the lungs. And, they remind us to always use distilled water to reduce the amount of minerals expelled by the humidifier. Good teen health - January 11, 2011 - 5:00 pm A new study finds being optimistic can have a positive impact on a teen's mental health and behavior. Results show, optimistic teens have less health risks and less risk for the onset of depression. Parents can begin to build their child's optimism early on. Ear Infections - January 12, 2011 - 5:00 pm, 11:00 p |
