Include any other comments or information you want the Commission to consider in evaluating your compliance with the Children's Television Act (or use this space for supplemental explanations). This may include information on any other noncore educational and informational programming that you aired this quarter or plan to air during the next quarter, or any existing or proposed non-broadcast efforts that will enhance the educational and informational value of such programming to children. See 47 C.F.R. Section 73.671, NOTES 2 and 3. WDEF aired PSAs which were of benefit to the youth and adults alike during the 1st quarter of 2015. A complete listing of the PSAs which aired on 12.1 and 12.2 during this quarter can be found in our public file. The station sponsored several programs which engaged children and one such program is the Golden Apple Program. WDEF News Anchor, Joe Legge, through on air announcements, solicited students with their parents permission to nominate a teacher who has had a positive impact on their lives. A teacher is then chosen by a panel of judges based on the students comments and then highlighted along with the nominating student on the first and 3rd Tuesdays each month during our 6pm Newscast. At the end of the school year, a banquet is held to honor all the Golden Apple Winners and to announce the teacher of the year. Cash awards are given to the winner and runners up and their schools An example of a Golden Apple Winners is Jill Blackmon who recently began a STEM program at East Lake Elementary School. Her students say it has really boosted their confidence in math and science and unlocking new opportunities for them to consider as they grow up. Another initiative sponsored by WDEF is a news segment called What's Right with Our Schools. WDEF News Anchor John Mercer features a segment each Monday during the 6pm newscast highlighting educators, students, individuals or community groups which work with the students and schools in an extraordinary manner and who go above and beyond the norm in helping to educate children through life lessons. One example occurs at Battle Academy where businesses/members of the community are coming together to help give guidance and mentor students at the school in a variety of areas. Another example of What's Right With Our Schools occurs at Orchard Knob Middle School where the school/students are joining forces with STARS to tackle bullying. A growing number of Tennessee teens admit cyber bullying is a real threat to their mental health. Our Chief Meteorologist, Patrick Core spear heads a program called, Kidcaster. It is both instructional and educational for children ages 8 years to 14 years. This program encourages parents/students to apply to become a kidcaster. They must tell why their child would like to be a kidcaster on the air. When a child is selected, they, along with family members come to the TV station for a behind the scenes tour of the station. They are allowed to observe a newscast as it's televised live. Near the end of the 7pm newscast, they are introduced on the air as our kidcaster for the day. Afterwards, the student along with the meteorologist prepares and tapes a forecast for the next day. The segment airs during our 11PM news that evening and again the next morning during the morning news. This gives the students hands on learning experience working with weather equipment and computers. The 1st quarter we had children from Graysville Elementary, Lafayette Middle, Woodmore Elementary, McCallie School, Chattanooga Christian, Battlefield Elementary also from other schools in our viewing area. WDEF also sponsored a program called Weather-In-The-Classroom. WDEF Meteorologists visit school classrooms and make presentations to students on how weather patterns form and move across the country and how they will affect our area. They also provide safety tips on what to do when severe weather is approaching. Over 685 students viewed the weather presentation in classrooms during the first quarter of 2015.
