Describe the educational and informational objective of the program and how it meets the definition of Core Programming. This animated series is based on the books by Richard Scarry. The fictional city Busytown is an enchanting place thats abuzz with energy and life. Episodes are divided into multiple segments with different themes. The first and last segments involve the children in Busytown exploring their community. At the end of each segment the children have learned a little about their community and the world they live in. The middle segment shows children life in other cities featuring daily activities of adult characters in places such as Paris or Rome. Each episode includes two song segments in which the first, Imagine That, teaches various things like general science to how banks work. The second song segment that teaches safety is called Play it Safe. The aim of the series is to stimulate imagination and foster vicarious play, teach pro-social behavior (such as generosity, friendliness, persistence, altruism, understanding of others points of view, empathy, acceptance of others idiosyncrasies), help children move beyond family attachments to the world of friendships and community, help children develop skills on which academic learning depends such as attention, language, memory, active processing of a story and an interest in reading. During the second quarter, 2011, WBFF continued its commitment to childrens educational and informational needs both through broadcast and outreach efforts. The station continued to produce and air PSAs for local non-profit and governmental agencies including the Maryland Mentoring Partnership, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Central Maryland, CollegeBound Foundation, Baltimore Area Council Boy Scouts of America, and Girl Scouts of Central Maryland...as well as national campaigns including Lets Move focusing on prevention of childhood obesity and promotion of fitness, Department of Energy conservation actions, American Dental Association and Partnership for Drug Free America. Additionally, WBFF airs daily community calendars that promote local events designed for children and families. The CollegeBound Scholar of the Week aired throughout second quarter with a weekly salute to a college bound Baltimore City Public High School senior showcasing their academic, leadership and community service achievements. Twenty collegebound seniors were saluted. Throughout second quarter, WBFF presented "Get Fresh Baltimore", a campaign addressing fresh food accessibility issues, resources and choices for children and their families to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables. PSAs were produced promoting fresh food choices and availability at farmers markets, grocery stores, and schools. The Great Kids Farm was showcased. Here Baltimore City students received hands-on field experience focusing on food production and consumption from the farm to the family meal table. Additionally, a food literacy course was offered in elementary schools and children created Get Fresh posters which were reproduced for a mass transit and broadcast campaign promoting healthy food choices. Students become Get Fresh food ambassador delivering healthy food messages to their peers. In May 2011, WBFF partnered with the Coalition for Childrens Mental Health to broadcast a public service campaign to create awareness of warning signs of mental health issues in children and resources available for parents to get help for their children. The station served as the media partner for Mentor-Zing, a celebration of mentoring partnerships and programs for youth and The March for Babies to benefit the March of Dimes and its mission to deliver healthy pregnancies and babies. Station management continues to serve on local non-profit boards with organizations serving youth and children including the Fit Families Foundation, South Baltimore Learning Center, and Mental Health Association of Maryland.
