WJAC-TV on air personalities made many appearances this quarter at sites throughout the viewing area. Chief Meteorologist Jim Burton made an educational weather presentation to students at Ligonier Elementary School on Nov. 16th. He hosted students from Ferndale High School who came to watch the noon news on Nov. 29th. On Nov. 30th, two students from Johnstown High school job-shadowed Jim to learn the duties of a meteorologist. Jim hosted a breakfast with Santa on Dec. 8th to assist Bishop McCort High School students with a Christmas fund-raising event and played Santa at Cambria City Daycare on Dec. 19th. On Dec. 20th, he served as a speaker for the Johnstown High School Community Christmas Party, and on Dec. 22nd was job-shadowed by two students from Bishop McCort High School. Meteorologist Tony Martin participated in the Ebensburg Christmas Parade on Dec. 1st. The Sales staff volunteered at the Learning Lamp's after-school program on October 23, helping kids with art projects and sharing stories. Fourteen WJAC staff members manned the Salvation Army Red Kettle on December 6th to raise money for low income families during the holiday season. GM Kevin Hayes and HR assistant Nancy Shull, News Director Jim Platzer and his wife, and Chief Technical Director Victor Kovalchik and his wife worked at the Salvation Army Toy Store sorting presents for underprivileged families on December 13th. WJAC employees raised 80 dollars for the Women's Help Center Angel program and bought toys and clothing for fifteen kids in the Salvation Army Treasure Tag program. The sales staff also hosted a blood drive on Dec. 11th for station employees and family members to donate during the holiday season, when donation are critically low. On Oct. 5th, news anchor Marty Radovanic participated in the Pitt Blue Gold Golf Outing to raise money for a local college athletics department. In cooperation with the Student Government Association at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, WJAC sponsored a Congressional debate for Candidates in the 71st District on Oct. 16th. Finally, news anchor Lindsay Ward, sales executive Cynthia Truscott, and news reporter Maria Miller assisted in a Salvation Army shopping program at J.C. Penney helping children from low-income families find winter apparel on several Sunday evenings in October. NBCs THE MORE YOU KNOW campaign highlights issues of national concern facing youth today, such as substance abuse, diversity and tolerance, drinking and driving, gun violence, child abuse, peer pressure, mentoring, and staying in school. These PSAs air each month to support those concerns. The MORE YOU KNOW WEBSITE features scripts from the public service announcements and referral information from the organizations referenced in the PSAs. The site also offers educational materials produced in cooperation with NBC programming. WJAC TV has a very important feature on its own website. There is a Consumer Product Safety section that lists all product recalls posted by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
