Community leaders parter with local foodbanks and area schools to host a six week challenge every fall. Currently, Student Hunger Drives are taking place in the Quad Cities (Iowa and Illinois) and harlotte, Northcarolia. Students are the power behind this mission creating afun and innovative ways to raise money, collect food and feed the hungry.The Student Hunger Drive celebrated 25 years of helping in 2010. The food collected is delivered to the River Bend Foodbank located in Moline, IL. The Foodbank serves 22 counties in Iowa and Illinois. Light The Night Walk - Friday, October 14, 2011 The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Light The Night Walk is the nation's night to pay tribute and bring hope to people battling cancer. The annual event brings communities together to celebrate and commemorate lives touched by cancer. Participants will walk carrying illuminated balloons - white for survivors and red or supporters along a 1 to 2 mile path. Dedication banners are provided for the opportunity to display a name or message honoring or commemorating a family emember or friend with cancer. The walk is open to call. It does not require a particular level of fitness. Last year, thousands of people in approximately 240 communities in the United States and Canada participated in a Light the Night Walk event. Funds from this event will support the purchase of equipment and supplies for Dooglas Park Place located in Rock Island. Douglas Park Place is unique in that it provides the opportunity for women and their children to remain together throughout the addition recovery process within a supportive and structed environment focused on the successful recovery of each woman. Genesis Flu-free Quad Cities Telethon - Sunday, October 16th, 2011 WQAD partnered with Genesis Flu-Free Quad Cities with the goal of vaccinating as many as 9400 elementary school kids and stopping the spread of flu in our community. It's estimated that for every child receiving the yearly flu vaccine five other people are protected from the flu. That's an important safeguard for those most at risk of developing a serious flu illness - children under 6 months old who are too young to ve vaccinated, grandparents, pregnant moms and people with chronic diseases like diabetes, asthma and heart disease. To help raise money for this campaign, Genesis and WQAD hosted a Telethon on Sunday, October 16th from 5pm until 7pm. Our anchors hosted this broadcast (Jason Fechner, Matt Randazzo and Rachelle Davis). Boo at the Zoo - Saturday, October 29th and Sunday, October 30th, 2011 WQAD, Eye Surgeons Associates P.C., Sexton Ford, The National Bank and Trinity Regional Health System teamed up with Niabi Zoo to present a fund day for one of the most popular holiday sof the year for children - Halloween. "Boo at the Zoo" provides children with the opportunity to have a merry-no-scary fun time in a controlled and safe environment. Businesses and non-profit organizations participate by decorating a designated area in a Halloween theme, staff the booth dressed in costume and give out"goodies" to the children as they trick-or-treat around the zoo. 2011 Toys for Tots Campaign Created in the fall of 1947 in Los Angeles, California by Marine Corps Reserve Major Bill Hendricks, Toys for Tots today, is one of the nation's flagship Christmas charitable endeavors.
