Include any other comments or information you want the Commission to consider in evaluating your compliance with the Children's Television Act (or use this space for supplemental explanations). This may include information on any other noncore educational and informational programming that you aired this quarter or plan to air during the next quarter, or any existing or proposed non-broadcast efforts that will enhance the educational and informational value of such programming to children. See 47 C.F.R. Section 73.671, NOTES 2 and 3. WDEF aired PSA's which were of benefit to the youth during the 4th quarter of 2012. A complete listing of PSA's which aired on 12.1 and 12.2 during this quarter can be found in our public file. The station sponsored several programs which engaged children and one such program is the Golden Apple Award Program. News Anchor Joe Legge through on air announcements, solicited students to nominate a teacher who had had a positive impact on their life, Then a teacher was chosen by a panel of judges based on the students comments then highlighted on Tuesdays Newscast at 6 along with the nominating student. An example of a Golden Apple winner was Heritage High School teacher Robyn Hope. She parlayed her love of reading as a child into a career teaching literature. Students say Hope's creative way of teaching makes her class a daily highlight. She always has something new to teach and some different ways of teaching that helped them appreciate literature. Another Golden Apple teacher nominated by a student was Kathryn Roman from the Valley View School. Roman uses music to build self-esteem and self confidence in her students. Roman moves her classes through stations and using games to teach them how to read music. Students say they are learning and having fun at the same time. Just another example of teachers going above and beyond and being recognized by their students and our station as our Golden Apple teacher of the week. Another initiative sponsored by the station was a news segment called Whats Right With Our Schools. News 12 Anchor John Mercer featured a news segment each Monday during the 6pm newscast highlighting educators, students, individuals or community groups which worked with the students/schools in an extraordinary manner and who went above and beyond the norm in helping to educate children through life lessons. Examples featured in our weekly broadcast was from Lee University and how they sought to develope helpful habits when students saw a need to build up the food resources. They targeted neighborhoods and collected donations to alleviate hunger in the community during the holiday season. Another example is from CSLA School and how they raised $11,000 at their "Bond-Fire" event this year to buy new technology for their school classrooms. John also featured the Central Choir Festival. Choir directors from several schools thought it would be a good idea for area high school choirs to come together for a choir festival. They thought it would be a good opportunity for students who shared a love of music to come together and interact. Among the schools participating were choirs from CSAS, East Hamilton Central, East Ridge, Ooltewah, Signal Mountain and the Howard School. An outreach program of WDEF to Children was Weather In the Classroom and was sponsored by the station as well. Our Weather Forecaster, Chip Chapman went to several area schools including Chattanooga Valley Elementary, Red Bank Elementary, North Lafayette Elementary, Chattanooga Valley Middle School, Chickamauga Elementary, Westside Elementary and Black Fox Elementary and spoke with students about what is involved in developing a weather forecast for our area. He also taught students about different types of cloud formations and weather patterns utilizing age appropriate information. He also discussed with the students weather safety procedures and provided weather safety tips. WDEF also joined forces with the Salvation Army in the Angel Tree Promotion. Trees were placed in area mall with small card board angels listing a needy child or senior citizens name along with suggestions for gift purchases. Through on air exposure our viewers were asked to stop by any area mall, pick up an angel and return it with a gift. Thanks to joint efforts the Salvation Army assisted 4,763 individuals with Christmas which was a 39% increase in requests for help.
