In addition to airing PSAs from national and local organizations focused on the needs of children, the station also produced PSAs and provided sponsorship for local youth organizations. WBFF served as media sponsor of the Baltimore Area Council Boy Scouts Scouting for Food program in which Scouts collected non-perishable foods to stock the shelves of local food pantries. In addition to the PSAs, a morning news interview with a Scoutmaster and Scout highlighted the need and program the day prior to the food collection on March 14th. From mid-January through the first week of March, WBFF executed its 28th Annual Champions of Courage Black History Month Essay Competition. Maryland students grades 6-12 were challenged to write a 90 word essay saluting the person in their life who shared and demonstrated the lessons and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. More than 3000 entries were received and 20 were selected. 20 winning essays were taped and students saluted their Champion of Courage on air during this period. An Awards Breakfast was held on January 31st and the 20 students were presented a $100 award. The top 4 essayists were presented additional awards and their schools cash prizes...sharing the lesson that when an individual achieves, his community benefits. The keynote speaker was Major General Linda Singh, the first female and first African-American to command the 6700 member Maryland National Guard. Additionally, 5 community champions were saluted with feature news stories sharing their commitment to providing youth with opportunity to become the best they can be and their daily demonstration of Dr. King's lessons of equality, fairness, and brotherhood. In January, WBFF continued its long-term commitment as media sponsor of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr parade in downtown Baltimore. Anchors Kai Jackson and Patrice Sanders, Chief Meteorologist Vytas Reid, and reporters Larry Collins and Jim Uhrin participated in the parade.
