Include any other comments or information you want the Commission to consider in evaluating your compliance with the Children's Television Act (or use this space for supplemental explanations). This may include information on any other noncore educational and informational programming that you aired this quarter or plan to air during the next quarter, or any existing or proposed non-broadcast efforts that will enhance the educational and informational value of such programming to children. See 47 C.F.R. Section 73.671, NOTES 2 and 3. WDEF aired PSAs which were of benefit to the youth during the 3rd quarter of 2014. A complete listing of the PSAs which aired on 12.1 and 12.2 during this quarter can be found in our public file. The station sponsored several programs which engaged children and one such program is the Golden Apple Program. WDEF News Anchor Joe Legge through on air announcements, solicited students with the permission of their parents to nominate a teacher who has had a positive impact on their life. A teacher was then chosen by a panel of judges based on the students comments and then highlighted along with the nominating student on Tuesdays Newscast at 6. An example of this is Sallie Lesperance from Gilbert Elementary. Sallie Lesperance has a passion for teaching children with special needs. Her patience and understanding calms students frustrated with assignments so they can continue to develop. Golden Apple will then culminate with a Golden Apple Banquet held honoring all of the nominees at the end of the school year and a Golden Apple Teacher of the Year will be announced. Another initiative sponsored by the station was a news segment called Whats Right with Our Schools. WDEF News Anchor John Mercer featured a segment each Monday during the 6pm newscast highlighting educators, students, individuals or community groups which worked with the students and schools in an extraordinary manner and who went above and beyond the norm in helping to educate children through life lessons. One example is a new program that is helping students at Brainerd High school with their networking and social skills. Making a first impression is always important, whether you are looking for a job, or just trying to communicate. Our Chief Meteorologist, Patrick Core has a program we call Kidcasters where local parents can go to our website and tell why their child would like to be a kidcaster. After a child is selected, they, along with their family members came to the TV station for a tour then went behind the scenes to observe a newscast as it was televised live. Near the end of the 7pm newscast they were introduced on the air as our kidcaster for the day. Afterwards, the student along with the meteorologist assistance prepared and taped a forecast for the next day. The segment aired during our 11PM news that night and again the next morning during our morning news. Each child received a personalized Kidcaster certificate and a DVD of their on air kidcaster weather report. This quarter we had children from Brown Academy, Montessori School, Chilhowee School, Home Life Academy, Barger Academy, Dade Middle School, Allen Elementary as well as two homeschooled students.WDEF also sponsored the 7 on 7 tournament in Dalton, GA which is a multi school football players tournament featuring defensive backs against offensive backs. We also have air a segment called High School Band Spotlight weekly feature during our Thursday night 11pm newscast which highlights a high school band in our viewing area and includes a performance by the band and its' musical theme for the season. Our Touch Down Friday Night segment included interviews and performances by cheerleaders as our game of the week during our 6 & 7pm newscasts. Schools featured in the 3rd Quarter included Hixson High School and Soddy Daisy High School, Heritage High School and Ringgold High School in Georgia, Notre Dame High School and Chattanooga Christian, Red Bank High School and Signal Mountain High School, Ooltewah High School and East Hamilton High school, and NW Whitfield High School and Dade County High School in Georgia.
