Include any other comments or information you want the Commission to consider in evaluating your compliance with the Children's Television Act (or use this space for supplemental explanations). This may include information on any other noncore educational and informational programming that you aired this quarter or plan to air during the next quarter, or any existing or proposed non-broadcast efforts that will enhance the educational and informational value of such programming to children. See 47 C.F.R. Section 73.671, NOTES 2 and 3. WDEF TV aired various youth oriented PSAs during the second quarter. A complete listing of the PSAs which aired is located in the public file. WDEF and Bi-Lo Supermarkets sponsored a program called Golden Apple Awards. Students were asked to nominate a teacher who had had a positive influence and helped motivate them to learn. From the submissions, a teacher is chosen each week and featured during our 6pm newscast highlighting the individual teacher and their teaching methods which sets them apart. This program runs through the school year from September to May. We held our annual awards banquet during the second quarter to honor the recipients. Gift cards were awarded to the teachers and cash awards were given to the schools. WDEF also sponsors WEATHER IN THE CLASSROOM. One of the station meteorologists visits area classrooms and gives an age appropriate presentation on the basics of weather and how to develop a daily forecast and long range forecast for the area. At the end of the presentation, a Q & A session is held. Another feature involving students, teachers, schools and members of the community is a segment called WHATS RIGHT WITH OUR SCHOOLS. Again, not only students and teachers but members of the community are encouraged to let us know of special programs and or events connected to the schools/community that presents the many positive things happening in our area. Some of those featured were kids who set up a Lemonade Stand to Raise Money to Fight Cancer at Westside Elementary School. The idea behind the project was to raise money to battle childhood cancer. We also featured Brown Academy where students were able to learn about plant life using Aquaponics. Another program designed to expose children to another educational experience is KIDCASTER. Kids were encouraged to write in and tell why they would like to be chosen as a Kidcaster for the day. Each week, a student between 8 and 13 years of age was selected to come to the WDEF studio, go on a behind the scenes tour and then pull together a forecast with the help of our meteorologists and present a forecast on the air. Kids love the whole experience of being in a TV station and actually going on the air. This experience does much to build the students self confidence. Yet another project that was featured during the second quarter was Fabulous Fathers and Miraculous Mothers. Children were encouraged to write in and nominate their mother or father during our Mothers Day and Fathers Day promotions. From the nominees, an award was given each day to the winning Mother and Father. During second quarter, we were also one of the sponsors for Cystic Fibrosis walks in Cleveland and Chattanooga. The walks helped raise funds for research and area Cystic Fibrosis chapters. Cystic Fibrosis is an inherited disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States. Thanks to research, kids now can expect to live into their 30s
