See 47 C.F.R. Section 73.671, NOTES 2 and 3. During the 2nd quarter of 2010, WDEF TV aired various youth oriented PSAs. A complete listing of PSAs which aired is located in the public file. In the months of April and May, WDEF continued to sponsor the Golden Apple Awards program. Students were asked to write a paragraph nominating a teacher who has had a positive influence and has motivated them to learn. Winners were chosen weekly by a panel of judges then the weekly winners were highlighted during our Tuesday 6pm newscast. The winning teacher along with the nominating student were featured in the Golden Apple segment in our newscast and also featured on our stations website. The Golden Apple Awards culminated with a banquet on May 12. News anchor, John Mercer featured a segment in our Monday, 6pm newscast called, Whats Right with Our Schools. This segment features educators, students, individuals or community groups which work with the students/schools in an extraordinary manner and go above and beyond the norm in helping to educate children through life lessons. John highlighted Bradley Central Students as they were recognized for their efforts to help children half way around the world. They helped the -invisible children- of Uganda. Thousands of children in Central East Africa have been abducted and forced to fight and kill in a rebel army. The students raised 15-thousand dollars to help rebuild schools in Northern Uganda. Another group highlighted was a group of 5th graders at Antioch Elementary where students learned leadership skills through a special academy at school. The students also participated in food and toy drives. They participated in a buddy program where they were paired up with a kindergarten student and served as a positive role model for them and also helped tutor some of the younger students. Another group which were featured in What Right With Our Schools was the Beta Club and Leadership Class at Ooltewah High School. The class held a social awareness week to spread the word to end the R word- This was part of a national campaign by Special Olympics. The idea was to raise the consciousness of society about the dehumanizing and hurtful effects of the word retarded and to encourage people to stop using the R word. Another story featured was The Reading Promise-Can you imagine reading every night for over 3200 days? Alice Ozma and her father accomplished just that. She is now sharing her story with the world. Alice recently visited Rossville Elementary to talk about the book she wrote and encourage children to get excited about reading. She and her dad first set a goal to read together for 100 nights. Once they finished, they set a new goal for 1,000 nights that turned into what Alice and her dad call the streak. Alice said her father read to her every night without missing a night from the time she was in the fourth grade until her first day of college. Now 23, Alice is traveling the world promoting her book-The Reading Promise: My Father and the Books We Shared and encourages kids to get excited about reading. During the second quarter WDEF did a weekly segment called-Kidcaster and kids in grades 3 thru 8 (with their parents consent) could write in an tell why they would like to be a Kidcaster and give the weather forecast during the news. Each week a young Kidscaster was chosen and would come to the station, watch a live newscast behind the scenes, observe the meteorologist as he prepares the weather forecast and then tape a brief weather forecast which aired during the late news and during the morning news the next day. Following the taping the child and their family were given a tour of the station. During the second quarter WDEF Meteorologist Brian Smith traveled to several schools to do Weather In The Classroom. Brian would demonstrate the basics of forecasting weather along with safety tips when severe weather occurs. The series also provides an opportunity for the five girls to learn how to cope with some of the social and emotional issues of self-esteem relating to physical features and other personal attributes, emerging friendships and peer-group relationships, and other experiences found in Trollzopolis. This program is specifically designed to further the educational and informational needs of children, has educating and informing children as a significant purpose, and otherwise meets the definition of Core Programming as specified in the Commission's rules.
