NON BROADCAST EFFORTS Career Days: The department head managers and news reporters, anchors as well as production attend school career fairs to encourage students to keep their grades up and tell about jobs available in the television market. Heart of the Valley: An on-going campaign to help the less fortunate or disaster related people. Elementary through high school age students raise money to aid victims of disaster. Teach for America: KRGV's General Manager, Community Relations Manager as well as news anchors and reporters participate in Teach for America in talking to high school students about their jobs. GEAR UP is a project that serves 28 school districts from Port Isabel to Laredo. The purpose of the project is to encourage parents and students to consider post-secondary education. The program provides parents and students with mentoring opportunities, university visits and important information regarding college options. CHANNEL 5 NEWS anchors are the GEAR UP spokespersons and donates countless hours speaking to students in large assemblies and small groups. Each news anchor is talent for numerous public service announcements encouraging parents to get involved. Each week, KRGV produces a news feature about GEAR UP.
