Include any other comments or information you want the Commission to consider in evaluating your compliance with the Children's Television Act (or use this space for supplemental explanations). This may include information on any other noncore educational and informational programming that you aired this quarter or plan to air during the next quarter, or any existing or proposed non-broadcast efforts that will enhance the educational and informational value of such programming to children. See 47 C.F.R. Section 73.671, NOTES 2 and 3. | WHEC-TV participates in a project whereby local high school seniors are nominated to be the News10NBC Scholar Athlete of the week. Every Tuesday our sports-team selects a unique senior who not only holds an 85 or higher average academically, but also excels in one or more school athletic programs. The recipient is profiled during the sports segment of our six o'clock newscast, September through the first week of May. Non-Broadcast efforts made by WHEC during the quarter were, on April, 11, 2019, fifth grade students from the Journo Club at Pal Mac Intermediate School, visited the station with a special interest in weather forecasting. While here they watched our Noon Show. Meteorologist, Samantha LaRocca, showed the students the weather lab, explained how she puts together a forecast, her educational background and answered questions. A station tour given by Program Coordinator, Karen Calarese on May 14, 2019. News Anchor, Deanna Dewberry and Operations Manager, Steve Scheutzow, also helped conduct the tour by talking to the students from Greece Arcadia High School, sharing stories, experiences and information about not only their jobs but the paths of their careers; Investigative Reporter, Jennifer Lewke, visited sixth graders at Churchville Chili School. She talked with them about interview techniques and storytelling. The class is writing their own non fiction stories about someone who made an impact in our community. On June 12, 2019, News Photographer, DeJon Washington, gave a station tour to students from Edison Tech High School. They were able to experience a professional news environment. Part of the students curriculum, is to conduct their own weekly newscast. General Manager, Richard Reingold, also met and spoke to these future broadcasters. On June, 13, 2019, News Photographer, DeJon Washington, hosted a station tour for pre school aged children from the Volunteers of America Childrens Center. While here the children watched the Noon Show from both the control room and the studio. These children had done weather projects in school and now were able to see what it is really like to do live weather forecasting. One of our Do The Right Thing recipients, Haley Pacheco and her mother Merari RowleyPacheco, visited the station to watch the Noon Show and take a tour on June 24, 2019. Executive Assistant, Emily Putnam, News Anchor Reporter Brennan Somers and Program Coordinator Karen Calarese all hosted our guests, answered questions and shared personal experiences they have had while working at News10NBC. News Anchor, Nikki Rudd, emceed the Zoobilation 2019 Generations of Wild event for Seneca Park Zoo on June 1, 2019. Funds raised help support the zoo, its animals, and the many programs and entertainment, they provide for all ages; News Anchor, Nikki Rudd, emceed the Opening Ceremony for the Monroe County Public Schools Athletic Conference for Special Olympics on May 30, 2019. WHEC-TV airs a childrens programming Public Service Announcement that explains the programming educational informational symbol; what it means and how parents can use it. Other Public Service Announcements that aired throughout the quarter that pertained to children and teenagers were, ARC of Monroe; Ronald McDonald House; YMCA; Willow and Girl Scouts. Details regarding air dates and times, for the above, can be found in the NBC and WHEC report under Additional Documents. After filing the Stations Childrens Television Programming report for second quarter 2018, the Station realized that it was not including its weather multicast channel, which, as a public service, airs weather radar, weather alerts, and other weather information 24 hours per day, and which generates no revenue, as part of the total number of hours of programming on its Children TV Reports. Although the Station believed it had been airing extra childrens educational programming beyond FCC guidelines, the Station, upon further review, appeared to have been a half-hour short of its weekly multicast core complement since the fourth quarter of 2015. Accordingly, since third quarter 2018, the Station has aired at a minimum the correct number of required hours, and is working to broadcast additional childrens educational programming in order to address any prior omission. Effective May 1, 2019, WHEC DT.3 ceased to broadcast local weather information. The channel switched to Start TV network programming. Also on May 1, 2019, WHEC DT.5 launched with the Heroes and Icons network programming. This report reflects nine weeks of childrens programming on each new station. |
