Include any other comments or information you want the Commission to consider in evaluating your compliance with the Children's Television Act (or use this space for supplemental explanations). This may include information on any other noncore educational and informational programming that you aired this quarter or plan to air during the next quarter, or any existing or proposed non-broadcast efforts that will enhance the educational and informational value of such programming to children. See 47 C.F.R. Section 73.671, NOTES 2 and 3. "WNCF TRANSMITS ON RF CHANNEL 31 BUT IS KNOWN TO ITS VIEWING AUDIENCE AS CHANNEL 32. THE LATTER IS USED IN THIS REPORT TO IDENTIFY THE PROGRAMS AIRING ON EACH OF ITS MAIN AND MULTICAST STREAMS. This report was prepared and checked by the Station's Attorney on January 4. I was told that all filing deadlines that are during the Government shutdown, or on the first business day after the FCC reopens, are automatically extended until the second business day after the FCC reopens. WNCF airs two non-core programs each Saturday morning starting from 6-6:30 A.M., and 6:30-7 A.M. A non-core program will also air each Sunday from 6:30-7 A.M. starting in the 1st Quarter. As a rule, no local commercials are placed in any E/I or non-core programming that airs on the station. At the beginning of this school year elementary school students from local schools in the River Region recited the Pledge of Allegiance during the early morningcast on Monday - Friday. Starting this year, the teacher, or a student introduced the class to the audience. Several educational stories were featured on the newscasts during the quarter. A Liberal Arts Class came up with spooky lab experiments using robots, dry ice, and smoke, and presented the Halloween themed project to the younger students. A Boots and Brellas drive was held to buy rain gear, rain boots, and umbrellas for children that have to walk to school. Attendance at many schools is lower on rainy days because students lack the proper rain gear. Some students got lessons in conflict resolution with the help of school officials, local groups and Montgomery's Police Department. They hope it helps cut down on violence in schools. Participating students will share what they learned with other students. Auditions were held for Future Weather Forecasters in September. Twenty-five children from six to twelve years old made the cut and were chosen to appear on the station's early morning newscast each Friday and give the weather forecast for that day, the weekend, and the following week. The child remains on the set after the forecast, interacts with the anchors, and picks the name of the birthday winner for that day. It is a good opportunity for the children to experience what all is involved in putting on a live newscast. The Golden Apple Teacher of the Week started back up in October. Each week a teacher is nominated for the award by parents, students, and their peers. Teachers were chosen from kindergarten, elementary, middle, junior high, and high schools in our viewing area. Students interviewed told how the teachers inspire, encourage, and motivate them. All were said to make learning fun for the students, and a teacher even allows singing, dancing, music, and talking in her classroom. The children think they are playing but are actually learning. A student said his compassionate teacher talked him out of being depressed, another teacher sings to her students, a math and science teacher was complimented for being helpful, and for doing and explaining everything to help those she teaches. All said they are told that they can do and be their best. WNCF will continue to provide the best E/I programming that is available for the youth in the River Region.
