In August, the KATU Family Matters station initiative was a School Supplies Drive for Friends of the Children, a non-profit organization which mentors vulnerable children in the local community. During this drive a childe received a new backpack and there was even enough leftover supplies for the kids' siblings. In September, KATU supported the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, by promoting their annual OneWalk which raises support and awareness about Type 1 Diabetes. KATU also produced vignettes in July, August and September in AM Northwest segments for Rootopia which brings farm to family ideas for viewers to grow, cook and eat together with their kids. The station also covered stories about Back to School topics covering text notifications about school alert systems, school volunteering, safe bus drivers, technology to help with homework, school zone safety, super lice, school bonds tax money, school dress codes & discipline and Portland Public school water bottles. KATU News also covered stories about lead in Portland Public school's water, kids and cough medicine, peanut-free lunch options, stranger danger and vaccines for school children. KATU News Kids Doing Good Stuff was also aired in various newscasts during this quarter. KATU also conducted 3 group tours during this quarter that included children from Summer Camps, Boys & Girls Clubs and Boy Scouts. |
