No local commercials are placed in any of the syndicated children's programs. Local time is filled with public service announcements targeting the youth, their parents, and care-givers. Each Monday - Friday different elementary school classes in the River Region area were featured giving the Pledge of Allegiance during the station's Early Morning News Program. During the quarter the station once again awarded area teachers with the Golden Apple Award. Alabama news Network visited schools in Montgomery, Elmore, Tallapoosa, and Autauga counties to honor the winners. Some of the comments from the students include "she urges us to strive for excellence and to have high expectations, he leads by example, loves us, and tells us life is short, and to be thankful for every blessing, she strives to make us better every day, and teaches us to stay focused, she is patient and will never give up on us, she challenges and motivates us, she tells us never to quit". The Golden Apple Teacher of The Year received over eighty-seven thousand votes, and the viewers chose Ms. Benita Taylor of Redland Elementary School in Elmore County for this honor. The station presented her with a plaque, and a brand new television. Some of the news stories during the quarter that featured and sometimes interviewed children included Distracted Driving Training, Community College Day, National Archery In Schools Program, Special Olympics where elementary students were invited to participate for the first time, a Kindergarten Open House, Elmore County Government Day, School Dropout Prevention, Alabama's Pre-K Best in the Country for the tenth year in a row, Summer Fun and Learning, Youth Leaders Conference, Bullying in Alabama, over two thousand students to attend the State's FFA competition, MPS Autism Summer Course, Troy Learning Program, Reading is Fundamental in Selma, Selma Summer Activities for Kids, and the Montgomery Zoo Camp for Kids. The station will continue to report on, and highlight the accomplishments of the youth in our viewing area, and to provide the best E/I programming that is available.
