Describe the educational and informational objective of the program and how it meets the definition of Core Programming. Astroblast, based on the book series by author and illustrator Bob Kolar, is set on a space station in an unknown solar system. Five animal characters and one three-eyed octopus of unknown derivation populate the station. Each episode begins with an everyday conversation or incident that grows into a predicament needing a solution. While these predicaments take place in a fantasy environment, the issues and resolutions resonate for a preschool audience. Through comedy and zippy action, our target audience sees how the characters learn lessons for practical living such as how to keep track of things that belong to you, practice good habits, clean up when you've made a mess, rebound from a failure or an embarrassing incident, or resist the urge to blame others for your mistakes. Include any other comments or information you want the Commission to consider in evaluating your compliance with the Children's Television Act (or use this space for supplemental explanations). This may include information on any other noncore educational and informational programming that you aired this quarter or plan to air during the next quarter, or any existing or proposed non-broadcast efforts that will enhance the educational and informational value of such programming to children. See 47 C.F.R. Section 73.671, NOTES 2 and 3. WLWT airs only Ad Council PSA's during our local commercial time within our core children's programming. These PSA's address children's issues and are targeted at children and parents. On Sunday, June 12, 2016, WLWT on its main digital channel, pre-empted children's programming due to the tragedy that occurred in Orlando, Florida. The following programs were affected: The Chica Show at 11:30am; Noodle & Doodle at 12:00pm and Teen Kids News at 12:30pm. To make up for the pre-emptions WLWT then provided a special hour airing of Teen Kids News on Saturday June 18, 2016 from 1:00-2:00pm; an episode of Teen Kids News on Sunday, June 19, 2016 at 1:00pm and another special hour airing of Teen Kids News on Saturday, June 25, 2016 from 1:00-2:00pm. During second quarter 2016, WLWT aired 5 additional episodes of the regularly scheduled core children's program "Teen Kids News." In each instance that a "Special Edition" of Teen Kids News aired, it was aired back-to-back with another episode of Teen Kids News, which created a series of "mini-marathons" of the program at points throughout the quarter. These additional airings of the program were intended to help increase audience awareness of the program and to further educate and inform teen children viewers about topical, current news events, during a significant election year. These additional core episodes were promoted as special editions and viewers were made aware of the times via crawls and program services. WLWT participated in the annual St. Vincent DePaul /Cincinnati Reds Strike out Hunger Food Drive in June 2016. The drive was a huge success as 7,250 pounds of food was collected which is enough to provide more than 4,800 meals for local families in need. The Food Drive is so important during the summer when children are home from school and parents struggle to provide meals for them.
