The stations of CNY Central have several ongoing efforts aimed at engaging and informing the children of our communities in both non broadcast and broadcast efforts. Off air. several on air staffers and other members of our news team have done school visits a meteorologist encourages looking at science related careers with elementary and middle schoolers a photojournalist was a keynoter at a SUNY Oswego career exploration event for college students a news anchor spoke to career development classes at Baldwinsville high school. We welcome group tours as a way of showing what we do and encouraging young people to think about setting career goals and using education to understand technology. This quarter we welcomed a group of high school young women sponsored by Leadership Greater Syracuse to look at broadcasting and the work ethic involved in our work lives. We also work with area libraries. One staffer has a child therapy dog involved in pre school story hours and also special programs for 6 to 10 year olds. This quarter one of those programs was a collaboration with a Sheriffs Deputy on dealing with strangers and other unknowns like strange animals and also who to trust when in trouble. We also talked about dangers of social media. We hosted four news interns in the just completed semester two from Syracuse University one from SUNY Oswego and one from Colgate University and four more in Sports. They work with reporters and producers learning our craft and getting a hands on chance to develop skills and make contacts. On air we have regularly scheduled segments in our newscasts to inform and showcase positives for young people Athlete of the Week runs on Thursday evenings profiling a high school athlete who also excels academically and in community service. I Challenge Niko is often sports related but includes talking about broadcasting and work ethic. Focus on Family Tuesdays 5pm on NBC3 includes stories aimed at helping children and families succeed. In your Community is a daily events calendar on CW6 News at 10 and events listed include many aimed at giving caregivers of young children a look at community programs mostly free an accessible This quarter our news content also focused on youth violence in the Syracuse area and police and community efforts at finding solutions.
