Include any other comments or information you want the Commission to consider in evaluating your compliance with the Children's Television Act (or use this space for supplemental explanations). This may include information on any other noncore educational and informational programming that you aired this quarter or plan to air during the next quarter, or any existing or proposed non-broadcast efforts that will enhance the educational and informational value of such programming to children. See 47 C.F.R. Section 73.671, NOTES 2 and 3. | In 2018, as part of a year-long multi-platform commitment to tackle the Addiction Epidemic in our community, WLWT has produced daily news stories focusing on this topic and in particular the faces of those impacted in our communities, primarily children. WLWT also has a dedicated link on the WLWT.com homepage, State of Addiction, with local and national content providing updates and information for viewers. On April 21, 2018, core program Wilderness Vet interrupted approximately 10 minutes prior to the end of the show in order to air breaking new coverage of the funeral proceedings of former First Lady and American icon Barbara Bush. Because the show aired substantially in its entirety, a preemption report for that episode is not included in the Digital Core Programming Summary section of this report. During this quarter, WLWT scheduled eight Special Episodes (513/301/302/303/305/306/307/308) of "Animal Exploration with Jarod Miller" which aired on two consecutive weekends in June shortly after Cincinatti Public Schools concluded their academic calendar (and during the period of time that CPS was conducting summer school). These airings of the program were intended to help increase audience awareness of the program (which is new to station viewers in this market) and to further educate and inform viewers to preserve the innate human instinct to explore. These episodes all aired in back-to-back blocks creating mini-marathon formats to better draw special attention to them and to reinforce their educational and informational messaging. Engaging teen viewers is a principal goal of the station's airing of these Special Episodes. The station notified listing guides about these Special Episodes, and the station aired an informational crawl to promote the Special Edition episodes. On April 15, WLWT aired two additional episodes of the regularly scheduled E/I program "Teen Kids News" in a back-to-back block to create a mini-marathon of the show immediately adjacent to its regularly scheduled airing. The Teen Kids News mini-marathon was intended to further educate and inform the teen audience about significant news events; the importance of engaging teen viewers in "news of the day," which is a principal goal of these additional episodes, cannot be overstated. Teen Kids News content also included social and cultural developments and "feel good" stories designed to expand the literacy and world view of the teen audience. In short, these episodes were scheduled to update teens about recent events and reports, some of which they missed due to network sports coverage. These additional core episodes of Teen Kids News were promoted via on-air crawls, and the television listings services were notified in advance of their broadcasts. One or more episodes of children's programming that were preempted during the quarter were not rescheduled. The Digital Core Programming Summary section of this report would not permit the station to include preemption reports for such un-rescheduled preemptions, and FCC Staff has advised that no preemption report for such unrescheduled episodes is necessary. |
