Include any other comments or information you want the Commission to consider in evaluating your compliance with the Children's Television Act (or use this space for supplemental explanations). This may include information on any other noncore educational and informational programming that you aired this quarter or plan to air during the next quarter, or any existing or proposed non-broadcast efforts that will enhance the educational and informational value of such programming to children. See 47 C.F.R. Section 73.671, NOTES 2 and 3. | Third Quarter 2018 Children's Programming Preemptions and Make-goods on KONG: Sunday, September 16, 2018, three afternoon weekend children's shows on KONG were preempted from airing in their primary time periods: Biz Kids at 1:00P, Jack Hanna's Into the Wild at 1:30P, and Made in Hollywood: Teen Edition at 2:00P. Each of these preempted KONG children's shows from 9/16/18 were made good earlier that same day: Biz Kids aired at 7:30A, Jack Hanna's Into the Wild aired at 8:00A, and Made in Hollywood: Teen Edition aired at 8:30A. These children's shows were preempted from airing at their normal times to enable KONG to air the NBC Sports Special: World Equestrian Games on Sunday, September 16th from 1:00 - 3:00P, so KING TV could broadcast live TV coverage of the Seattle Storm WNBA championship parade and celebration from 1:00-3:12P that same day (9.16.18). Programming Note: NBC's 'The More You Know' kids programming series will launch a new show for fourth quarter 2018 designed to meet the educational and informational needs of children between the ages of 13 to 16. 'Vets Saving Pets' will begin airing October 6, 2018 on KONG, replacing 'Health and Happiness with Mayo Clinic' every Saturday at 9:00A. 'Vets Saving Pets' will examine the interpersonal stories of veterinary professionals working to save the lives of animals in need of urgent medical care. BROADCAST ENHANCEMENT EFFORTS ON KONG-DT 16.1 FIRST ALERT SCHOOL NET: More than 100 Washington schools (elementary, junior high and high school) are an important part of KING 5's weather reporting on KONG. The weather network consists of computerized weather stations located at schools that calculate wind speed, precipitation, temperature, and other basic weather information. These weather stations are on-line with KING 5's weather system and the National Weather Service, and provide the most accurate and current weather information available in Washington State. First Alert School Net reports are included in each KING 5 newscast on KONG. The School Net is of great educational benefit as a hands-on learning opportunity. In the classroom, students use the weathernet stations to learn about weather metrics and incorporate meteorology into their science curriculum. They can bring weather forecasting to their own neighborhoods. |
