Each Monday through Friday during the school year, children from local elementary schools in the area gave the Pledge of Allegiance during the early morning news program, and Future Weather Forecasters predicted the weather on the early morning news program each Friday in April. The 6-12 year old boys and girls were chosen after auditioning to give the weather report with Meteorologist Ryan Stinnett. During the month of April Golden Apple Awards were presented to teachers in Selma and Greenville. Students were interviewed and said the teachers help them learn in an interactive way that makes it easier for them to learn, and they are amazing teachers who are really nice. Voting for the Golden Apple Teacher of the year started on April 18 with 4 finalists who had been given the award during the school year, and ended on May 15. With over 270,000 votes casted, the viewers chose a teacher from the St. James School in Montgomery who has been teaching for 24 years. The news aired several education stories where students were highlighted. Valiant Cross students learned about the importance of healthy food and nutrition, and how to grow some of their own food. Their school also won 50,000 dollars in a Community Thrives Competition. Students at Troy Youth Leadership Forum were featured, and Alabama's Pre-K Program was named the best in the Nation for the 11th straight year. There were two stories on the Summer Feeding Programs for children in Troy and Montgomery, and students at Montgomery Academy spent the summer learning about giving back. Twelve students were given money to donate to a non-profit of their choice. The station will continue to provide the best E/I programming that is available for the youth in the River Region. |
