During the second quarter, WSET-TV addressed the educational and informational needs of children through a variety of programming, outreach activities, and sponsorships of local items and events. WSET-TV provided ongoing support to the Lynchburg City Schools Education Foundation, Inc., which uses its resources to provide direct assistance to the students and teachers of Lynchburg City Schools. WSET-TV made a contribution that has been allocated to an "ABC 13 WSET-TV Classroom Innovation Grant." WSET-TV staff members participate in educational and community events and make presentations about their careers year-round. On 4/4/17, Reporter Marissa Parra represented WSET-TV at the Liberty Christian Academy Career Fair. She spoke to students interested in journalism and answered questions about what is needed to pursue a career in broadcasting. On 4/5/17, Meteorologist Melissa LeFevre was a requested speaker at Sheffield Elementary School. She spoke to the Kindergarten class about severe storms, weather forecasting, and safety issues. Sports Director Dennis Carter spoke to a Sports Reporting class at Liberty University on 4/5/17. He lectured on the process of sports reporting, qualifications needed, and added anecdotes from his own experience as both a reporter and anchor. A question and answer period was allowed after the presentation. On 4/6/17, Reporter Katie Brooke represented WSET-TV at the Campbell County Schools' College and Career Day. She spoke to students interested in journalism and answered questions about the education and skills that are needed to pursue a career in broadcasting. On 4/17/17, Chief Photographer Jemon Haskins and Reporter Chris Hoffman represented WSET-TV at Heritage Elementary School's Career Fair. They spoke to students about the various careers available in broadcast news, skills and education, and answered students' questions after the presentation. On 4/19/17, Weather Anchor Will Stafford spoke to the Kindergarten class of Elizabeth's Early Learning Center. He explained how to stay safe during storms and answered the childrens' questions after his presentation. On 4/20/17, Meteorologist Melissa LeFevre was a requested speaker at Desmond T. Doss Christian Academy. She spoke to the First and Second grade classes about severe storms, weather forecasting, and safety issues. On 4/27/17, Reporter Caren Pinto represented WSET-TV at the NES Providence School Career Fair in North Carolina. She spoke to students interested in journalism and answered questions about what is needed to pursue a career in broadcasting. Chief Meteorologist George Flickinger was a requested speaker to approximately 100 children, 4th to 7th grades, at the Appomattox County Schools' "Summer STEM Camp" on 6/12/17. His presentation included weather prediction, meteorological issues, and their effect on the environment. He allowed a question and answer period afterwards. Weather Anchor Will Stafford was a requested speaker at the Halifax County "Public Safety Youth Camp" on 6/19/17. He spoke to approximately 30 campers, ages 9 through 13, about weather safety and prediction. He answered their questions after his presentation, which included science experiments, and PowerPoint graphics. WSET-TV hosts visits to our studio by various community and school/college groups on a regular basis to educate students and others about broadcasting, including broadcasting careers. A group of Communication Studies students from Lynchburg College toured the station and met members of the News department on 4/27/17. They were given information on WSET-TV's digital and on-air broadcasting procedures, and were allowed to ask questions of the News team. On 6/22/17, a group of 13 residents and chaperones from the Cee Breeze Personal Care agency (a mental health assisted needs agency) toured the station and watched the Midday newscast. During this quarter, WSET-TV had four college interns in the News department and one college intern in the Production department. Additionally, station management served on the board of directors of various non-profits including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Virginia, Fork Union Military Academy, HumanKind, Blue Ridge Lacrosse Club, Lynchburg City Schools Education Foundation, Inc. and Ronald McDonald House Charities-Southwest Virginia Board during the quarter.
