During the second quarter, WSET-TV addressed the educational and informational needs of children through a variety of programming, outreach activities, and sponsorships of local items and events. WSET-TV provided ongoing support to the Lynchburg City Schools Education Foundation, Inc., which uses its resources to provide direct assistance to the students and teachers of Lynchburg City Schools. WSET-TV staff members participate in educational and community events and make presentations about their careers year-round. This quarter on 4/6/16, Reporter Valerie Bragg spoke at South Boston Elementary School. Students, in the age group of 3- to 5-year-olds, learned about what a reporter does and how that story makes it to a newscast. Approximately 400 students listened to her presentation and were permitted a question and answer period. Chief Meteorologist George Flickinger was a requested speaker to the 2nd Grade class at Huddleston Elementary School on 4/7/16. There was a presentation on severe weather, storm safety measures, and a question and answer period following the presentation. On 4/14/16, Anchor/Reporter Danner Evans and Weather Anchor Will Stafford visited Bass Elementary School and spoke to students about broadcasting careers, weather prediction, and storm safety. Students were permitted a question and answer period after the presentation. On 4/25/16, Weekend Sports Anchor Dave Walls and Chief Videographer Jemon Haskins attended the Career Day event at Heritage Elementary School. They spoke to students about careers in journalism and answered students' questions about broadcast television. Chief Meteorologist George Flickinger was a requested speaker to the Liberty University Geology class on 4/27/16. This session was a presentation about the specifics of meteorology and climate. The class learned about the science of meteorology, education and skills needed for a career in broadcasting, and were permitted a question and answer period after the lecture. On 4/29/16, Morning Meteorologist Melissa LaFevre spoke at Elizabeth's Early Learning Center. She spoke to 16 students about severe weather and how to remain safe during storms. She included several age-appropriate graphic handouts to distribute to the class. A question and answer period was given after the presentation. A weather talk to 20 special needs students at Brookneal Middle School was presented by Chief Meteorologist George Flickinger on 5/24/16. He spoke about severe weather, storm safety, and answered students' questions after his presentation. WSET-TV hosts visits to our studio by various community and school/college groups on a regular basis to educate students and others about broadcasting, including broadcasting careers. During this period, a group from the Altavista Senior Center toured the station, watched the Midday newscast and met members of the News department on 4/14/16. On 4/28/16, Field Trip Fun - a group that helps parents and children bond over education and learning - toured the station and spoke to members of the News department. The group consisted of 6- to 8-year-olds. On 6/7/16, 50 students and chaperones from Central Middle School toured the station. This was a STEM-only group who were allowed to speak to two Meteorologists and observe how a weathercast is done. A senior group from Calvary Baptist Church-Concord toured the station on 6/9/16 and watched the Midday newscast. On 6/23/16, a group of 20 Girl Scouts and parents toured the station, spoke to members of the News department, and watched the 5:00 p.m. newscast. During this quarter, WSET-TV had five college interns in the News department. Additionally, station management served on the board of directors of various non-profits including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Virginia, Fork Union Military Academy, HumanKind, Blue Ridge Lacrosse Club, and Lynchburg City Schools Education Foundation, Inc. during the quarter.
