Half-hour episodes from the past are freshly introduced by Carter Merbreier. Each program includes some of these five basic elements: American Folklore, Literature, Art, Invention, and Ethnic Diversity, along with a special feature or guest addressing needs and concerns of children. (1) AMERICAN FOLKLORE is a tribute to the people and places that have made our country great, and which is meant to serve as an inspiration to children to aspire to the same importance. (2) ARK ART encourages children to explore and develop their talent at that young age when drawing efforts are at their peak. By sharing the simple forms and basic colors, children are encouraged to express themselves in very simple art. (3) IN THE BOOK encourages reading and counters illiteracy by making words and books fun and adventurous. (4) AMERICAN IMAGINATION presents examples of inventiveness on the part of Americans which have changed the world. Not so much the great inventions, but the smaller, more-understandable-to-children sorts of creativity that they can expect to emulate like the fly-swatter, the zipper, the ice-cream cone. They find a comic book advertisement for Fleemco, an agency that will provide "Replacement" parents or adults to substitute for certain individuals. Brother and sister decide to send in the $1.98 fee in hopes of obtaining parents to replace their lost ones. They acquire an unorthodox pair of Replacement parents, Dick Daring and Agent K. Dick is a former daredevil stuntman and Agent K is a British super-spy. Neither seems to know much about parenting, although their intentions are good. Agent K's highly intelligent automobile, C.A.R., her former spy partner, also joins the household. Their attempts to forge a family and adjust to a new school are both touching and comedic. Riley and Todd discover that they can call Fleemco to request replacement of any adult whom they dislike, who is overly strict, or who is merely uninteresting. The temporary Replacements for teachers, neighbors or other community figures never prove to be as exciting or fun as the siblings had hoped, and are often immature and obnoxious. As things go awry, Riley and Todd learn that they need adult leadership, discipline, role models, order and structure. By the end of each story they are eager to return the Replacement and reinstate the original adult. Stories revolve around issues such as cooperating with household/family rules, taking responsibility, fairness, building self-esteem, and trust. |

Sometimes Kuzco wonders whether being Emperor for the rest of his days will be a pleasure or a trap. Kuzco thwarts attempts by the nefarious Yzma and her henchman, Kronk, to stop him from doing well in school. If Kuzco were to fail at his class work, Yzma would become Empress. By day she attends public high school, along with her older brother Jackson, but by night she is emerging pop star "Hannah Montana". Except for her family, only her two best friends, Oliver and Lilly, and her bodyguard know about Miley's career as a singer, and she strives to maintain privacy, fearing that her new classmates would treat her very differently if they knew of her stage identity. Miley wears blonde wigs while performing, and manages to escape being recognized. Miley's mother died three years before the story begins, so her dad is now a single parent. He has just begun dating again. Miley misses her mother very much. One of the songs that she writes and performs is about the pain of growing up without her mother. Unlike her brother, Miley is a dedicated student. At school, her enemies are Amber and Ashley, two girls who constantly bully Miley. Oliver and Lilly are fiercely protective of their friend. Miley has ordinary teenage insecurities, but remains true to herself, despite the allure of concert life, the limos, parties, and glamorous clothes. Approximately 1,105 public service announcements targeting children age 16 or under aired this quarter within core and non-core children's programs on our multicast channels D2/D3. These public service announcements contained a wide variety of messages concerning such subjects as health, safety, drugs, social service, the arts, cultural opportunities, literacy and education. WPVI-TV also aired the following family-oriented programs this quarter featuring subject matter of educational and informational value for children and their families. (1) "Gospel Music Presents," a series presenting great and historic performances by the biggest names in Gospel music (aired on our D1 channel 1/16/11: 2:00-3:00 PM). (2) "We Have A Dream," a two-hour special celebrating the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., with successful and inspirational African Americans who have achieved the great American Dream (aired on our D1 channel 1/29/11: 2:00-4:00 PM). (3) "Raising the Roof: Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King with Song and Deed," a tribute concert to the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., featuring the Boston Children's Chorus and the Young People's Chorus of New York City. The program blended spirituals, popular songs, and international music to embrace cultural differences and to illustrate the struggle for equality and peace. With music as a catalyst, "Raising the Roof" unites youth from many races, religions, and socio-economic levels to work in harmony (aired on our D1 channel 2/20/11: 2:00-3:00 PM). (4) "6abc Presents: Mary Poppins: A Backstage Pass," a behind-the-scenes look at the hit Broadway musical "Mary Poppins," coming to the Academy of Music in Philadelphia March 23-April 17, 2011, and the story and movie on which it is based. The story revolves around the household of George and Winifred Banks and their two young children. Mary Poppins is the catalyst who comes into their home to help them find family and love again. Mary Poppins is about magic, but even more about valuing what's really important in life (aired on our D1 channel 3/19/11: 7:30-8:00 PM & 3/27/11: 5:30-6:00 PM and on our multicast channels D2/D3 3/26/11: 3:30-4:00 PM). (5) "Sports Stars of Tomorrow," a weekly half-hour program focusing on today's youth as they pursue their dream of becoming the next sports superstars. Agent K's highly intelligent automobile, C.A.R., her former spy partner, also joins the household. Their attempts to forge a family and adjust to a new school are both touching and comedic. Riley and Todd discover that they can call Fleemco to request replacement of any adult whom they dislike, who is overly strict, or who is merely uninteresting. The temporary Replacements for teachers, neighbors or other community figures never prove to be as exciting or fun as the siblings had hoped, and are often immature and obnoxious. As things go awry, Riley and Todd learn that they need adult leadership, discipline, role models, order and structure. By the end of each story they are eager to return the Replacement and reinstate the original adult. Stories revolve around issues such as cooperating with household/family rules, taking responsibility, fairness, building self-esteem, and trust. |
